Timber Framed Barn Part 25 Rafters and stud walls
For the last few weeks I have been getting the roof rafters up and getting some studs walls done. Due to a family emergency I am going to be away a little bit on and off for a while so I have recruited Sam to help speed the project along a bit while I am here. Thanks to Sam for his hard work.

I Had To Rebuild The Waterwheel, The Driveshaft Snapped!
Переглядів 201 тис.Місяць тому
About three months ago I got a call from the customer saying the wheel keeps shutting itself down. while trying to diagnose the problem over the phone the problem became very clear as the whole drive shaft broke in two. I packed up the tools and went to take it apart to bring it home for a hub rebuild.

For the last two weeks I have been working on finishing the stone walls and the retaining wall for the drain at the back of the building. It was slow going due to the poor weather. But it looks like we have now had the worst of it so im keep to get going on the roof again. Unfortunately due to me stacking up over a ton of roofing in the way of one of the walls I was unable to do one wall. but I...

I could not get or mill timbers long enough so I decided to use some steel RSJ's and make them tie in to the timber. Hope you enjoy the video.

In this video I got to install an overspeed controller and fix a broken weld on the wheel. the controller is very simple. it reads the speed of the wheel via a proximity sensor and triggers a really if it goes passes a set value. that then drives an actuator that pulls out a pin and shuts the water off.

In this episode we go back to the waterwheel and get some more jobs ticked off the list. However we still have alternator issues due to the alternator not being rated correctly. I contact the factory that makes them and they admit that they are not able to do the output advertised. So I am going to convert everything to work with a induction motor as generator

This project actually started over two years ago now. The owners son contacted me about doing a survey for a potential hydroelectric system at his fathers property and paid for a consultation for a birthday present. You want clay to dry out before your first burn. Otherwise it will crack and disintegrate quickly. You also want to let your wood dry out. You want quite high temperature in your kiln and moisture in your wood is going to reduce the temperature.

    Just my 2c worth but I think your bearing mounts might need to be rubber mounted (or at least at the gearbox end). My guess is the shaft was flexed in the bearings as it turned due to the weight of the gear on the motor side and the belts pulling on it forward. It's cantilevered on that side, so the flex was transferred back to the joint at the wheel using the bearing as a pivot point. Another solution might be making the shaft longer and putting it through a third bearing after the gearbox.

    I'd say the majority of the off grid folks I see right now just happen to be living on boats, especially sail boats. Its amazing the inovation you see now, lots of LIPO batteries and many have wind generators. One thing that is very new (since the advent of the extremely large battery banks) is the high current alternator, some of them are 250 amps and I think that technology is dangerous because they get far to hot.

  • @markwebster8371
    @markwebster8371 4 дні тому

    Adjust the limit on voltage, to make sure that you don't allow more current than the alternator is rated for... Current makes heat and waste. Voltage gives you more power per amp.

    One thing I've seen with streams like this is, huge differences in flood times, absolutely crazy amounts of water are possible. In the U.S. we actually have agencies who keep track of those amounts year after year and you can look back and see a extra large year and what happened. In 1964 there was a flood that was considered to be a 100 year max but many said it was more like a 500 year max, absolutely unbelievable amounts of water came through the waters on the coast of northern California !
